I make school visits. I will be happy to work with small or large groups.  I like to show kids how to turn their own memories into creative writing.

A former junior high, high school, and college English teacher, I have conducted creative writing workshops for children, teens, and senior citizens.  I received a master of fine arts in creative writing from Wichita State University.

My presentations include an author talk on how history becomes story.  I offer an  exploration of how family stories and historical facts weave themselves into a published historical fiction novel.

I also offer a workshop that uses historical photos to stimulate ideas for further historical inquiry and writing, and a four-session workshop in which middle or high school students use their own life experiences to learn about the use of character, setting, plot, detail, and imaginative word choice.

My fees are $600 for a full day (4 presentations); $300 for a half day (2 presentations); and $175 for a single presentation. These figures do not include the cost of lodging, meals or transportation. Visits arranged through Arts Partners are subject to Arts Partners fee scheduling (Wichita, Kansas only).

To schedule a visit, send an email to  visits@debraseely.com or write the Publicity department at Holiday House, 425 Madison Avenue, New York, NY 10017.

This is an example of the old-style fenceposts mentioned in Grasslands.  They were made of catalpa wood, which is very strong and durable.  These fence posts still hold up barbed wire.
